Thanks for all suggestions so far. I will work with the info and further look thru 8th & 9th AF loss lists.
http://francecrashes39-45.net/ has 3 P-38 losses in the Orne area on 17 Aug 1944, but fate of pilots (POW, then EVD/RTD) differs from what is described in the FA Bn story, plus location elsewhere. Given the fact that the 3 P-38 pilots were at first POW and the presumed other P-38/F-5 in close proximity in Allied territory is evidence of where the frontline was on that day.
