RAF losses 10.08.1941

I'm searching for RAF losses in the channel the 10.08.1941 in the area around 20 miles east Dover/Callais. At about 13:45 the german ship "Sperrbrecher4" was attacked by several RAF fighters and bombers (According to my source Spitfire and Blenheim). The ship was hit by 4 bombs, killing 5 crewmembers. The "Sperrbrecher4" claimed 3 bombers and 2 fighters have been shot down by the Flak. Does anybody know the identity of the RAF ACs lost?

Thanks a lot for help

Lino

Could one of the aircraft involved be Hurricane IIc Z3840 of 242 Sqn which is said to have been shot down by ships's flak near Graveslines which is 15 miles southwest of Dunkirk

Re: RAF losses 10.08.1941

Hi Larry,
thanks a lot for info. According to the Luftwaffe claims from JG26 (Source: Tony Wood OKL Fighter claims collection) 4 RAF fighters and 2 bombers have been shot down by fighters. It would be maybe interesting to know, how many RAF ACs have been lost overal this day.

I assume a "sharing" of claims or maybe a favoritism of Fighter claims? After all, my source is also mentioning that Bf109 have been participating in this battle and also that a flak crew member of "Sperrbrecher4" was awarded for his action.

Greetings

Lino

Re: RAF losses 10.08.1941

Not only the Hurricane was downed but 2 Blenheims (V5854 and Z7280) of 226 squadron as well. It's also correct that 5 crew were killed aboard the Sperrbrecher but on board of VP1509 5 men were kia and so were 2 men of VP1506 all due to strafing.
So it turned out to be a busy day at the Northern cemetery at Flushing two days later.

Hi Wim,
thanks for info. Background: I'm currently trying to get more info about the history of Sperrbrecher 4, specially the related airfights. Attached you will find a text and a drawing about the attack, made by a crewmemeber of Sperrbrecher4.

Greetings

Lino

Lino

quite interesting and thanks for that. I myself researched the events on that day quite thoroughly and if you are interested (think you are) I can mail that extensive document to you directly.
