Great find, Harrison!

I would read 161xx7. Too bad we'll miss the 4th and 5th digit...

Greetings from Trebizond

thanks guys...

This is a German one...

Apparantly found near Viterbo in 1944...any loss records in that area that could match the known numbers?

There was a lot of action around Viterbo that Spring. It's extremely unlikely to have been an ANR machine if it was that far south.

One possible number is the Bf 109 G-6 of Uffz. Erich Erbe, 8./JG 53, W.Nr. 161707, black 4. He died when he was shot down near Orvieto, on 6 April 1944 however.

I don’t want to spoil anything but this does not feel right.
This werknummer seems to be applied with a marker. I don’t know if they were around in the early forties. Furthermore why would one apply the werknummer a second time to the tail. The one applied by the factory is would be clearly visible.
Could it be that is was applied after the crash?

Don't think the 4th number is a '7' as what can be seen is curved while the 6th number, the '7', is not curved. A '3' or '9' comes to mind so, 1613?7 or 1619?7

Dennis, it does look like magic marker but could have been apples much later to ID the piece.
