Ju 88 of LG 1, 4 November 1939
Hello,
A Ju 88 of I./LG 1 overturned and caught fire attempting landing at Osterbusen, near Greifswald. Oblt K Meyer and one crewman were killed and the bomber was destroyed. Source: “The Battle of France Then and Now”, by Peter D. Cornwell. ISBN 9-781870-067652 I have three questions: 1) Does someone have the full names of both casualties? The Luftwaffe Officer database has the same info than me, nothing more. 2) I can't find any place called Osterbusen near Greifswald, or in the surrounding Ostvorpommern province. My initial understanding was that it was an airfield name, but my current guess is that in case of a landing on an airfield, the text above would have been written "overturned and caught fire at landing" rather than "attempted landing", that is guess means it was some type of forced landing rather than a normal one. Then Osterbusen might a small place near/in Greifswald. There was an airfield near Greifswald at Ladebow, that was used by LG 1 at the time. Any idea on the location of this crash ? 3) according to Michael Holm's website, I./LG 1 did not start to use Ju 88 before June 1940, while both II. and III./LG 1 started in fall 1939. So maybe the unit listed above is not the good one? Thanks in advance |

In "Bomber Units of the Luftwaffe 1933-1945" the authors report a loss on 4 November 1939 near Greifswald. I.(K)LG1. No other info.

Re: Ju 88 of LG 1, 4 November 1939
That aircraft belonged to Lehrgruppe Ju88. The unit was formed at Greifswald late September 1939 from elements of I./KG30 and became disbanded on 1.03.40, when it was split into Ergänzungskampfgruppe 4 and 5. The Ju 88 as well as some Do 17 and Ju 87 flew with the unit code "U4".
The unit has had no relation to LG1.

Thanks to all
A still confused case. Ed, what is your source for saying the pilot was Oblt Klausmayer (or Klensmayer) in one word ? A pity that the second airman name seems to be lost. Regarding the unit, maybe the aircraft belonged to Lehrgruppe Ju88 and the crew to LG 1 ? |

Re: Ju 88 of LG 1, 4 November 1939
BA-MA document, original on Microfiche RL 2 III 184
and other copy of same page .. I now got (but had forgotten look at again) ... so might be neither. Unit is clearly stated " I./ I.G. Ju 88 " and one possibly can read " (Obltn. BlezsMayer) " in one word, but text on fiche is smudged a little but using comparision with known letter wording in same document this is my (new) conclution. (typist uses same letter I of Roman I and capital L ) Last edited by edNorth; 9th January 2018 at 14:28. Reason: updated |
