The USAAF in the Balkans, July to December 1944

Hi,

I’m interested in researching the 28th Squadron, 60 Group USAAF, 10th Squadron, 60 Group, USAAF and 7th Squadron, 62 group, USAAF from the beginning of July to the end of December 1944 and their operations over the Balkans. If it were the RAF it would be relatively easy (hopefully) to obtain the operation record books for the particular periods but as this is the USAAF I’m a bit stumped.

Can I ask, does the USAAF have equivalent documents to our ORBs and if so is it possible to access them on line?

Lastly, apart from ‘The Secret War in the Balkans: A WWII Memoir’ by Richard H. Kraemer, could anyone direct me to any good literature on this subject.

Many thanks in advance,

Russ

I suppose you are reffering to 60th and 62nd Troop Carrier Group.

Their records are at AFHRA, you can see their online catalogue here.
http://www.airforcehistoryindex.org

Here is one roll with their data>

What kind of data do you need?
Maybe I could help, I went through few of their rolls.

Hi Vathra,

Thanks for replying.

I was looking for operational details for each month from July to December 1944 i.e. target area, aircrew details, aircraft details, details of operations/objectives etc.

Many thanks,

Russ

Those details are pretty scarce in documents.
Two researchers I am in contact with searched through this period, but found little information they needed. They researched evacuation of allied airmen, in one case Halyard mission which is in exactly same period.

I will check in material I have if there is something that might be interesting for you.
There are separate archives of Groups and Squadrons, and there is not much details in Group War Diary.
