Lt Hans Harnold Stahlschmidt - 15 July 1942

Good afternoon

According to “A History of the mediterranean air war – Volume two”, Lt Hans Harnold Stahlschmidt claimed a Hurricane during a fight in the morning of the 15 July 1942, between 33° and 213° Squadron RAF and 10° Gruppo Caccia. In this fight, was shot down Sgt J.D. Newick of 213° Squadron.

In the Tony Wood’s Claims Lists, Lt Hans Harnold Stahlschmidt claimed an Hurricane on 14 July 1942 (Victory number 35) and another on 16 July (Victory number 36). the only luftwaffe claim for 15 July seems be the claim of the Fw Heinrich Steis at 18.55 Hours.

Has anyone news of other kills declared by the Luftwaffe on the morning of July 15, or different informations about Stahlschmidt claims for that day?

Thanks for any help.

Lorenzo

Re: Lt Hans Harnold Stahlschmidt - 15 July 1942

Hello Lorenzo,

in the loss tables of I./JG 27 in JFV 8/I Lt Stahlschmidt is named as Lt Hans-Hans-Arnold Stahlschmidt (losses of Bf 109 F-4 trop 8480 on 7 May 42, 8478 on 21 July 42 and 8704 on 7 Sep 42). So the spelling Hans-Harnold is a misspelling of Hans-H. Arnold.

Re: Lt Hans Harnold Stahlschmidt - 15 July 1942

Hello Leo

Thank you for the clarification. Any information is Always appreciated.

My research was related to the mission performed by eleven MC202 of the 4th Stormo of the Italian Air Force.

According to the book "Quellli del Cavallino Rampante" (Antonio Duma - Ufficio Storico Aeronautica Militare), two fighters from 84a Squadriglia, six from 90a, one from 73a and two from 96a, during an escort to three Junker 88, at South-East of El Alamein met 24 P40s divided into two formations. At the end of the battle, the Italians declared two planes shot down and one probable.

According to the AIR-27-1316-13, 213° Squadron met six Macchi 202s and four ME109s and claimed two Macchis and one ME109 damaged and one Macchi shot down (Probably the Sergente Maggiore Trevisan, who died of his injuries).

33° Squadron in the AIR-27-368-13 reported an "uneventful patrol"

I had doubts, given the number of aircraft encountered by the 213 ° Squadron, that there was any actual involvement of the JG27. but now the situation is more clear for me.

Once again, thank you all for your help, and sorry for my bad english.

Lorenzo

Re: Lt Hans Harnold Stahlschmidt - 15 July 1942

Leo.

Typo in JFV 8/I ??
He is called in the same book, Hans-Arnold in the "Abschüsse der I./JG 27" and Hans-Hans-Arnold in the Verluste (Losses).
Anyway, no other source i know calls him Hans-Hans-Arnold.
Wich would not make sence namewise by the way.
To repeat the same first name. At least with german names.
But i am glad to stay corrected if i am wrong.

All the best and

Schoene Gruesze

Norbert
