Re: Losses of Il-2 on April 14th, 1945 in Vienna area

BTW, this OOB quickly changed, as for instance 659 IAP Yak-9M (S/N: 5315311, engine S/N: 445-487) and 897 IAP Yak-3 (ml.Lt. Dmitry Antonovich Ermak, KIA over Ruckersdorf in his Yak-3 S/N: 310292 -from Tbilisi-, engine S/N: 422-491) were both lost on April 14, 1945.

Thanks Gabor for your contribution. I was aware of Ml. Lt. Ermak's loss but not of the Yak-9M S/N 5315311. Do you think it took part in the fights over the Vienna area? Cheers, Kurtl

Hi Kurtl,
Sure, I assume it was participating in the Vienna area dogfights. It was written off by the 14th as "failed to return from combat mission". Could be in prev. 1-2 days. No details yet.

Might well be so, Hammel writes in his Air War Europa (1994) on p. 474 only that 15th AF heavy bombers attacked a marshalling yard at Klagenfurt which is rather far away from Vienna, being some 80 km/50 mls WSW of Graz and mentions nothing on possible claim(s).
