what was the target of 1.KG53 on the 10/11th January 1941

Hi All,

Late on the 10/11th of January 1941 a He111 (H5) Wknr. 3633 from 1.KG53 made a emergency landing following Flakbeschuss at the beach of Zandvoort (Dutch coast).
http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=12620

I read online that around that time ports were targeted, Portsmouth was heavily bombed that night. But to land at the Dutch coast the target for this He111 must have been up North. So far I could not find any targets connected with KG53 on that date.
In addition to the information in the link above, I strongly suspect that this was the He111 of Oberleutnant and Staffelführer Franz-Josef Maubach. before their emergency landing they supposedly sank a 3000ton steamboat. if so there must be records of this claim. This information comes from the back of a photo.

I would like to know what their mission was that night and if a claim on a steamboat can be supported.

Regards, Thomas

You might find something in the daily sitreps for the period: http://wwii.germandocsinrussia.org/d...de/grid/zoom/1

Hi Nick,

Thank you very very much for the link, you helped me a lot!!

I found what I was looking for on page 272.

http://wwii.germandocsinrussia.org/d...inspect/zoom/6

Although it could be that the event took place on the 11th and not the 10th.

Their target was Fliegerhorst Hemswell

Thanks again!

Kind regards, Thomas

"Their target was Fliegerhorst Hemswell"

Fliegerhorst is airfield. I'm not sure everybody understands this typically German word.

...or RAF Hemswell as the RAF would call it
