01/09/39 : the Dirschau (Tczew) bridge
The story of Dilley's Ju 87s attacking the explosive charges of the Dirschau (Tczew) bridge a few minutes before the invasion of Poland started has been well documented (Cajus Bekker in particular).
But there were two bridges over the Vistula at that time. The one of the left was the original one (mid-XIXth Century) and the other was built a few years later because of the railroad traffic increase. The photo attached shows both bridges after they have been rebuilt after WW2. My question is: which bridge did Dilley attack? Thanks. Chris |

Re: 01/09/39 : the Dirschau (Tczew) bridge
In John Weal's book BF 109D/E Aces 1939-1941 (Osprey Aircraft of the Aces No 11) on page 8 you can find a photo along with the following caption: "The first aerial sortie of the war - by Stukas of 3./StG 1 - failed to prevent demolition of the Dirschau railway bridge (left)"
Your photo was taken from the opposite bank, so if the caption is correct, it would be the one on the right hand side. |
