Aircraft on picture '5' is interesting.
Looks very much like a DH.5
Only two digits visible, 35 and something in front which (if type is correct) has to be either a 9 or a B, making the serial number A935x or B35x.
Unfortunately such "Sherlockian" (can one use such a word??) deduction immediately runs into problem, since I cannot locate anything that fits....
Funny, it looks so much easier on TV....
Perhaps it is something totally different after all?
Pity the Jenny is not possible to ID, otherwise I agree with your deductions, even if I read the second HF 20 as A1233, but those 3s can be 5s as well in any combination you prefer!

I will start looking at the second album in a sec.

Yes, I do think that they are nice collections, particularly as ebay appears to contain less RFC related material than say it does for German aircraft. Though, perhaps I'm just not using the right search terms. One to ponder.


Now applying my Fandorin like detective skills.



It is a DH.5, that is one
We can see the numbers 3 & 5, that is two
The two photo collections contain aircraft from 3 TDS, that is three


Therefore I'd go for A9356 which crashed with 3 TDS. Necessarily based on incomplete information, but it appears plausible...

Confess I have not read anything about that Russian detective.
Sounds like he is pretty good....

I only have DH.5 references in the usual listings from the net, and it says nothing about the demise of A9356. From your own files or have you spotted something I don't know anything about?
I have not gone through the loss lists just for this one. Is that from where you got it?

The second album was also very nice. Enjoyed to look over the photos more closely.

The Parnall built Avro B8681 is, or at least was a model J (the whole 200 aircraft batch built by P were J models). No doubt some were mod later to Ks but if that is what we see, I cannot say.

The Bristol Fighter is B1106 which is known to have been in use by 59TS at Yatesbury.

The Morane-Saulnier type AC is an incredible enigma.
It was only built in 30 examples and was never supplied to either RFC or RAF and the only reason for it to be in Britain must have been for some unknown (to me) testing purposes.
Even more strange is the tiny serial number on the fin, which the photographer has managed to obscure with an an incredible skill in positioning. Hats off to that!
Looks like it starts with C13 or something which makes no sense unless it, for some reason, is an engine number.
Some of the "Bullets" supplied to RFC had engine numbers which ended with the letter C.
No, I need something better than that, but right now I draw a blank on what it could be....

Well I got the reference to A9356 from the obvious RFC serial source which does mention a crash while with 3 TDS.


Thanks for the info on the Bristol Fighter.


The Morane Saulnier is intriguing. I have posted to the 1914-18 forum,but I see from J.M. Bruce The Aeroplanes of the Royal Flying Corps that it is the incorrectly serialled B1395 and that it served with 6 TS.

The Morane, just can't believe it. A faulty letter!!

Yes, I just wished I hadn't followed my usual procedure of posting first and then thinking. Still Bruce doesn't mention 6 TS,so hopefully the kind people at the 1914-18 forum may have further unknown information about its career.
