Can anyone identify the unit or inscription seen on this Do 17?

Re: Unknow Wekusta Badge?
I am quite sure it is Wekusta 1, also referred to as the "Question Mark" emblem. According to Luftwaffe im Focus No 8, the original "Weather Frog" emblem was replaced sometime in 1942.
The article tells us that each of the staffel's aircraft had a name: "Cloud Hunter," "Cloud Stormer," "Cloud Leaper" and "Fog Crow." Photos published with this particular emblem do not have the wording seen in your photo. Last edited by edwest2; 8th June 2021 at 18:59. |

Re: Unknow Wekusta Badge?
You're welcome Chris. Yes, that is the emblem. There is another example that is drawn a little differently.

Re: Unknow Wekusta Badge?
Here is a youtube video showing various decals. At about the 2:14 mark, the Wekusta 1 emblem is shown.

Re: Unknow Wekusta Badge?
Chris,
Are the codes or werknummer known for this particular machine? I mean, are you able to see or discern them on your original photo? I do ask that for possible modelists. Seems a nice machine to build at 1/72, rather different from the Kampfgeschwader emblems offered "on the box". Another point, was this a normal Do 17 Z machine or did it had special meteorological equipments on board (additional barometers for instance or other instruments)? Did the WX man on board also act as a gunner or as Observer? OR it was a "2nd Dick" on board? The article informed seems to be quite interesting reading. A. |

Re: Unknow Wekusta Badge?
The codes and Wk Nr are not visible. Wekusta 1 OBdL used the code T5+-U and very few were lost during the war. Yes it did have special equipment (see my Do 17 book for that) and the meteorologist would act as a gunner
