NJG crashes or killed 21/22 June 1943

I have plotted out the losses of Bomber Command on the op to Krefeld on 21/22 June 1943 at
http://www.429sqn.ca/hollbw.htm

I am attempting to figure out who shot down Maj Kurt Holler. The details are at http://www.429sqn.ca/dedicate.htm

The information I received years ago said he was shot down at 1:41 am. I have just received copies of all the Bomber Command air combat reports from that night and of course there is no bomber claiming a destroyed german fighter from that time.

So where do I find a list of the NJG crews who were shot down or killed and hopeful locations and times on this night to cross reference it with the list of destroyed and probables>

All that Theo Boiten says in his Nachtjagd War Diaries is he was a victim of return fire so either the bomber was shot down or the crew failed to file a claim

Are these from his book? Any times given? Which NJG units were dispatched that night and what type of planes were they flying?

The book lists 38 kills between 0114 and 0320 hrs the units being NJG 1, NJG 3, NJG 4, NJG 5 (all pilots are named with the locations and Staffel/Gruppe given). Aircraft types are not listed-this you would have to work out!). Holler's loss is confirmed at 0141 hrs

Re: NJG crashes or killed 21/22 June 1943

Sorry Chris, I was looking for the times the NJG crews were killed or crashed.
I am attaching a copy of the list of air combat reports from Bomber Command. They are in time sequence and I have hightlighted the confirmed in red and probables in yellow.

I have also plotted out the NJG claims at
http://429sqn.ca/hollbw.htm

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Theo's book covers kills not losses. The book on losses by Balss rarely logs times. Notwithstanding what Alain has written, from what I can see, there were just three combat losses that night-all Bf 110s

Re: NJG crashes or killed 21/22 June 1943

Hello Greg,

Nice to read your posting after so many years! You might remember me as a frequent visitor to your nightfighter forum years ago. If not, take a look (:-)
Well, I first checked whether there was a difference between the English time and German time but it wasn't. Therefore the German time of loss (01.41) should be approx. the time that a RAF Bomber Command crew claimed to have hit a German nightfighter.

The Namentliche Verlustmeldung (German loss report) says this about Hollers loss (free translation): "On 22th June 1943 the crew of Major Holler - Feldwebel Gotha took off at 0.38 hours for nightfighting duties. During an attack on a four engined eneymy bomber their nightfighter was hit by gunfire. Major Holler must have been hit, because Gotha only heard some moaning from his pilot after a hit. The nightfighter became uncontrolable so Gotha decided to use his parachute and jumped. Major Holler was killed and recovered from the wreckage."
The reference to the four engined bomber must have come from Gotha who survived the jump but got wounded because he had hit the tailsection of the stricken Bf110.

One question: can you specify the source for your Excel-file? When I look in the Interception&Tactics Report 124/43 I discover some data which is not in your listing though they might be of interest:

1) Lancaster (?) 5 Group, 10 miles west of Overflakkee, 01.35, enemy aircraft closed in to 900 yds when reargunner opened fire. Tracer thought to hit enemy aircraft which broke away on starboard climbing at 600 yds. Enemy aircraft renewed attack about 5 minutes later (approx. 01.40 MH) from starboard quarter. Mid upper gunner opened fire at 700 yds. range. Enemy aircraft passed across stern level and was again lost sight of.

2) unknown bomber type, Goeree, 01.38, twin engined enemy aircraft believed ME.110 seen on starboard quarter. Rear gunner and mid upper gunner opened fire and enemy aircraft peeled off to port and was not seen again.

I do hope that this might help you further, all the best, Marcel

Re: NJG crashes or killed 21/22 June 1943

My source is based on copies of the air combat reports from the PRO. One of mine that fits is the Lanc from 619 at 2:48. The report is very fuzy and I couldn't read the location well, however it looks to fit your name of Overflakkee.

Some of the reports are hard to read because they are fuzzy or where there was no time listed I put a default time based on whether they were inbound/overtarget/outbound.

What is your source of information?

I also have a Stirling at 1:35 firing on an enemy aircraft which may fit for your second one.
