A shield to identify

A friend of mine, a long time Luftwaffe enthusiast, asked me to post this shield here for identification.

The following can be read/seen:

Das Reich,
Wehrmacht 1942,
the Luftwaffe eagle (symbol),
824

and MZR (the manufacturer's stamp).

Would this be a personnel identification tag, or otherwise what is it?

Regards,
Sinisa

Re: A shield to identify

It not looks a Luftwaffe Eagle. My best guess a badge (or other item) from 2.SS Panzer Division Das Reich.

Re: A shield to identify

Sergio,

Thank you for your reply. An eagle over Swastika is a Luftwaffe eagle. Nothing to do with the SS.

Re: A shield to identify

The photo shows few clear details. The two holes near the top corners are unusual. The position of the eagle is unusual. A better photo showing the text may help. A close-up of the lower circle may also be helpful.

Re: A shield to identify

I accept that the photo is of low quality, and that the details are not clearly visible. However, whatever is written on the shield is spelled out in the opening post.

Re: A shield to identify

What is the marking in the bottom circle? Are these letters or shapes?

Re: A shield to identify

Ed,

The marking in the bottom circle is the Hersteller mark. As per Steve's post No.4, that is MZR = Unterharzer Berg-u. Hüttenwerke GmbH, Werk Lautenthal, bei Goslar/Harz (N).
