Re: Need help, info on 640thBS gunner Gabriel E. Maldonado
Gabriel E. Maldonado is listed as passenger aboard USS LST-982 which left Southampton heading for the Normandy on 16 September 1944. It appears that he accompanied the rear echelon (68 men led by Capt Warren B. Ward) of 640th BS during their move to the ALG at Bretigny, France.
As far as I know there are only three MACR for A-20's of the 640th BS/409th BG: MACR12790 A-20G-30-DO 43-9749 409BG/640BS loss of control due to nearby AA explosions over Beauvoir, France on 30 April 1944, both gunners bailed out and became prisoners of war, but pilot managed to regain control and returned to base safely. Pilot 1Lt Preston B. Hanson O-747401 Armorer/Gunner SSgt Lionel Gerald Barbin 31268364 POW Engineer/Gunner SSgt Patrick G. Cahill 36805545 POW MACR5086 A-20G-30 43-9694 409BG/640BS shot down by direct AA hit on mission to Amiens, France on 27 May 1944. Pilot 2Lt Raymond Louie Gregg O-885980 KIA Armorer/Gunner Sgt Budd Wesley Teare 13058941 KIA Armorer/Gunner Pvt Archie D. Graves 17025399 KIA MACR5087 A-20J-5 43-9446 409BG/640BS shot down by direct AA hit on mission to Amiens, France on 27 May 1944. Pilot Capt Leland Francis Norton O-792301 KIA Bombardier 2Lt Robert Thomas Taugner O-682405 POW Armorer/Gunner SSgt Paul Duran 36742077 POW Mechanic/Gunner SSgt Julian Herbert Tate 13120755 KIA However, if an aircraft crashed in friendly territory or the whereabouts of the crew were known within a few days no MACR was created. |
