611 Squadron 28 August 1942
I have read the operations summary and AIR/27/2110 which seems to indicate this squadron was still flying a vic of three on operations rather than the four shown in the famous photographs of 1943. Can anyone confirm their operational formation in August 1942?
My interest is in a "probable" victory on 28 August 1942 when (A)F/Lt Crawford-Compton claimed "with his section". Some sources say four pilots but the ORB indicates he landed at Friston with two others after the sortie. The pilots that landed with him were PO Brian Tapley and PO Dennis Hogan, both (like Compton) New Zealanders. Hogan later makes claims in Tunisia with 111 Squadron but TOE shows no claims with 611. Tapley has a shared probable in June 1942 but I haven't found any other claims. regards Keith |
