Ju 88 / 1096

Hi all

According to a GQM loss report from On July 24, 1943, the Ju 88/1096 of KBS 2 crashed near Breitbrunn/A (near FP Hörsching/A).
The crew:
FF: Fw Wilhelm Schönborn +
BO: Uffz Erhard Stauber +
Sch Flg Helmuth Flohr +
Sch Flg Arthur Göppert +
was killed in the crash.

The WNr. can't be true because the
Ju 88 A-4/1096 was 80% damaged on July 6, 1942 by the 4/KG 77 in Sicily -and-
Ju 88 A-4/141096 was still flying in March 1944 with the 10/KG 54.
Can anyone help?

best wishes
JoMe

Servus JoMe!

Alas, I believe you have been bitten by one of the major problems in Ju 88 Werknummer research, the existence of several Ju 88 14x xxx number series (140 xxx, 141 xxx, 142 xxx , 144 xxx, etc.) plus the annoying Luftwaffe practice of frequently dropping off the "14" when recording these machines.

In short, try researching the Ju 88 WNr. 141 096. I suspect that's your kite.

Re: Ju 88 / 1096

Also consider that even though reported as 80% damaged that doesn't always necessarily mean that the aircraft is a total write-off.

Re: Ju 88 / 1096

Hi Anton and Jim

Thanks for your advice.
Since the crash of the "1096" was given as 100% and the entire crew died in the process, a total loss can be assumed.
Since the 141096 was still flying in 1944, she is eliminated!
Possibly the 1096 was rebuilt after the damage in July 1942 ???
I can't think of anything else now.

Best wishes

Re: Ju 88 / 1096

Hi JoMe

Have you details about all other number combinations?

Since humans compile/send on the data probably many times before they actually appear in the GQM report, I cannot see why the aircraft thus can't be 1906 (if that one was built), 7096 (if the digit 1 had been confused with a 7) or some other combination.

Once a fault creep in, it is close to impossible to be 100% certain where it actually is unless all other variables actually are covered.

Cheers
Stig

Re: Ju 88 / 1096

"Possibly the 1096 was rebuilt after the damage in July 1942 ???"

That's what I was hinting at. There are 3 incidents reported for WNr.1096, Sep-41 (40%), Jul-42 (80%) & Jul-43 (100%). Without documentation to the contrary, you're stuck with what you have.

And I get what Stig is saying, but if you start diddling with the numbers, again without documentation to support the changes, you're introducing more "fault creep".

Re: Ju 88 / 1096

The WNr. 1096 has had the registration DE+KT, which appeared in a Flugbuch from KBS 2 Hörsching on 15.05.43. This number is correct for the loss on 24.07.43.

The loss report for 6.07.42 seems to contain a wrong number. This aircraft ditched into the sea after a return flight from Malta.

Re: Ju 88 / 1096

141096, was with 1.F122 in june 1943, nd his maiden flight hv to be on nov.42, so as Gerhard suggested the Wn of the plane crashed on july 42 is wrong.

Re: Ju 88 / 1096

Thanks Guys

Amazing what pops up when asking a pertinent question
Indeed Jim I do agree with your thinking as well.

Sometimes, thinking outside the general box is interesting and it is good to see all the responses.

Cheers

Re: Ju 88 / 1096

Thank you very much Merlin

That's what I was looking for, proof that the Ju88 / 1096 in this period belonged to KBS 2.

Stig: WNr. 7096 was still flying with the FFS B 18 in 1944.

best wishes
