Re: Photo Nieuport

Indeed Clint

I know you are aware of that, but perhaps not everyone else is who reads this.

N237 has also been quoted as being with MS12 at Rosnay 21.8.1915 (photo caption)

N6265 is listed as being among those bought by USA, but it has never appeared in any listing as delivered to any US unit. A note by Toelle says it was in French markings at La Cheppe (no date)

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a line up of Italian Nieuports at:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Nieuport-27...MAAOSwD1Ne1zHb

Nieuport 27 N.5857 is known to have served with 79 Squadriglia, so can anyone confirm that the next plane a Nieuport 17 Ni.3630 also served with this unit?

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hello,

Currently on ebay is an unusually serialled Italian Nieuport at:

https://www.ebay.fr/itm/Aviazione-Mi...gAAOSw8-5eyX5S

It appears to show Ni 1 13388. According to G Alegi in WDF 92 Hanriot HD.1 13388 is a Hanriot serial. However Ni.388 was a Nieuport 10. Unusual.

Clint

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hi Clint

Thanks to the seller, we cannot be 100% certain exactly what the fourth digit is in the true serial number.
Neither can I explain the Italian "habit" now and then to add an extra digit out of line, as here, with a digit 1. Seems they try to tell us the type number I suppose

Anyway it looks to me as if the Italians used the Nieuport 10 as a kind of advanced trainer and it was ordered in many batches, one of which I have stated as Ni 13358 to Ni 13469.
This of course compromises Hd 13358 to Hd 13400....but the photo is not of any HD.1 is it?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of Nieuport 28 N.6193 at:

https://www.ebay.fr/itm/Photo-Pilote...YAAOSwykde212A

This machine ws Rickenbacker's aircraft, so presumably the reference to Lufbery is because he's in the photo? Unfortunately I wouldn't recognise him.

Clint

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hi Clint

New photo to me. I could have done without the pencil though....

Not sure from where you get that Rickenbacker flew N6193?
Aircraft was assigned to Lufbery from 16 April 1918 to 19 May 1918. It was actually damaged by Lufbery on landing already on 1 May, but was obviously still considered to be "his" aircraft. It was passed on to Philip Davis who used it from 23 May until his death 2 June. All my sources indicate that.

Rickenbacker on the other hand was assigned aircraft N6159 which he used from 15 April to 28 May when he switched to N6283 finally taking over N6169 on 7 June

Now, as you know, assignment is one thing and reality another. We know that pilots in units borrowed aircraft from each other due to various reasons so unless we have Rickenbacker's logbook we can't say with certainty if he ever flew N6193 or not. But there is no published evidence that I know of which says that.

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hello Stig,

Honestly I don't now know where I came up with the bogus information on Rickenbacker.I think I read N1659 at the time even and yet still acted as though I were seeing N6193..

With regard to the pencil, please go back and look again, the second photo (I think its the second, it may be the third is pencil free and a really nice picture.

Regards,

Clint
