Stinson C-91?
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of a Stinson trimotor. Is it possible to tell from what can be seen if this is the solitary Stinson C-91 42-79547? https://www.ebay.com/itm/20368904320...gAAOSw2M5c~tra Alternatively were any of the Australian machines operated in what appears to be olive drab,or the chinese owned example come to that? Re: Stinson C-91?
The snow capped mountains do not look like Panama. Perhaps one of the Civilian Tri-motors operated in Alaska?
http://joebaugher.com/usaf_serials/1942_4.html 42-79547 Stinson C-91 Model SM.6000A MSN A9110 ser no RX-17 impressed by USAAF in Panama. Removed from service in Sept 1943. Was originally NC15110, listed as going to Tranportes Aereos Gelabert of Panama as RX-17. One source has the plane as hveing been a low-wing Type A |

Re: Stinson C-91?
It would be great if this is NC15165, one of the few surviving Stinson tri-motors.
Was used in Alaska in the early 1940s. Regards, Leendert Last edited by Leendert; 8th November 2021 at 15:36. |

Re: Stinson C-91?
First of all the photo does not show a Model SM-6000 but a Model A.
I have no idea from where the details that the C-91 was a former SM-6000 comes from. The C-91 was a former Model A c/n 9110 registered NC15110 to Central Airlines. It was sold in Panama and registered RX-17(2) in May 1938, ie the second Model A to carry that registration. (RX-17(1) was c/n 9102) The owner of RX-17(2) was Transportes Aéreos Gelebert y Cia Ltda and was later impressed by the USAAF as '9110' on 14 Aug 1942. Assigned to 20th Troop Carrier Sq on 10 Sep 1942 still as '9110'. According to unit records the aircraft was grounded in Jan 1943 due to lack of spares. If 42-79547 was ever painted on the physical aircraft is not known, but it was transferred to the PAD in June 1943 (PAD = Panama Air Depot?) still not airworthy. A note made on 13 July 1943 said the aircraft may be taken to Trinidad, but as far as is known the aircraft never left the care of PAD. Probably scrapped, but its final fate is unknown. Cheers Stig |

Re: Stinson C-91?
Hi,
Thanks to all for the replies. A long shot, but can anyone identify the mountains in the photo. Agreed they do look a bit too majestic for Panama City, but could the C-91 have flown to more mountainous locations in South America? Admittedly, all I was going on for the possibility of the aircraft being the C-91 is the military vehicle in the background - by no means a clincher I know. Is the individual in front of the aircraft wearing military clothing? Regards, Clint |

Re: Stinson C-91?
Hi,
Thanks for the link. It certainly could be the same backdrop. Equally, I'm wondering if the star on the vehicle on the link I posted could in fact be the company livery rather than a US Army Star? Regards, Clint |

Re: Stinson C-91?
There seems to be some company text on the fuel truck, but unfortunately not decipherable.

Re: Stinson C-91?
I would think that seeing a civilian aircraft and military vehicles in the same photo at an airport in Alaska during the war (or at the beginning of the war) would not be that uncommon.
Notice the antennae or cable cutter in front of the windscreen. https://www.reddit.com/r/WeirdWings/...the_kuskokwim/ http://www.airminded.net/stin3m/ao_stinson_mirow.jpg https://jukebox.uaf.edu/site7/media-...ail/2561/14211 |

Re: Stinson C-91?
Hi,
The text on the second photo is interesting 'Chartered by the Reindeer Acquisition Unit'. Is that a military unit, perhaps? If so,there may be a military connection after all. Alternatively, its not long until Christmas,so doubtless there is a bad joke of some sort to be cracked... Regards, Clint |
