Looking for Arado Ar 68 Information

Your difficulty comes because you are caught in a contradiction. The Arado Ar 68 was not one of the most common Luftwaffe aircraft types, and it hardly enjoys much of the attention that the more glamorous fighter designs get. On the other hand, you seem to be looking only on the worldwide web for information, which as a rule offers mostly stuff with wide appeal. Go and find standard and respectable published Luftwaffe camouflage and markings references covering the 1930s such as the books of Ken Merrick and Alain Fleuret. They'll fix you up pronto.

Another quick option would be Volume One Section 1 "Birth of the Luftwaffe Fighter Force" of Classic's Jagdwaffe series. You might be able to find a bargain copy through Midland Counties.

There is also good coverage in Prien's, volume 1 of "Die Jagdfliegerverbande der Deutschen Luftwaffe 1934 bis 1945." It includes usage, photos, and a page of markings instructions.

Re: Looking for Arado Ar68 Information

Joe,

I have a copy of Flying Review International - Feb 1966 - containing an article "The Arado 68...last of the Luftwaffe's Fighter Biplanes".
This amounts to two pages of text, 4 photos and 1 page of profiles.

If you are interested I can scan it for you - drop me an e-mail or pm.

Re: Looking for Arado Ar 68 Information

Joe,

Ar 68 camouflage and marklng profile paintings (and, in many cases, corroborating photos) can be found in the following generally reliable books:

Crandall: 'Major Hans "Assi" Hahn: The Man and His Machines' (Eagle Editions [USA], 2003; 166 pages)

Fleuret: 'Luftwaffe Camouflage 1935-40' (Kookaburra Technical Publications [Australia], 1981; 144 pages)

Ketley and Rolfe: 'Luftwaffe Fledglings 1935-1945: Luftwaffe Training Units & their Aircraft' (Hikoki [UK], 1996; 88 pages)

Laureau: 'Condor: The Luftwaffe in Spain 1936-1939' (Hikoki [UK], 2000; 240 pages)

Merrick: 'Luftwaffe Colors, Volume 1: 1935-40' (Arco [USA], 1973; 164 pages) [also published by Kookaburra Technical Publications [Australia] as 'Luftwaffe Camouflage & Markings, Vol. 1']

Re: Looking for Arado Ar68 Information

Joe,

maybe you ought to be a little bit more specific about what you're looking for ...
early light grey Ar 68s with colorful Geschwader markings (cowling, fuselage spine, band etc.) or camouflaged operational Ar 68 day and night fighters or Ar 68s relegated to training duties? Or even the navalized Ar 197 (which was a derivative of the Ar 68)?
