new Mortons bookazine - Luftwaffe Fighters - Combat on all Fronts (1)

A little heads-up for a new Mortons book-azine currently on sale in Smiths and Tescos (in the UK) as well as the usual aviation bookshop(s). 130 pages, 200 illustrations. A selection of stories from some less well-known Gruppen and Geschwader including pilot profile/unit history- type features. Book 1 features mostly 109s (Scandinavia, Eastern Front, Malta, Romania), Book 2 (for next year all being well) is the Fw 190 volume - although other types/theatres are covered in both.

Recently taken delivery of this and as you would expect, it's excellent. Quite a diverse spread of articles on men and units and a very interesting piece on Reinhard Heydrich's career as a fighter pilot. Well worth picking up or as I did, free delivery through Morton's website.

The article about II./JG 77 in Norway seems to be a translation of Jean-Louis Roba's article in the latest issue of French mag Aéro Journal. Anyway it's a great bookazine and I'm looking forward to the next volume.

Luftwaffe Fighters: Combat on all Fronts Volume 1
Tales of Battle in the War-Torn Skies of WW2
Published: September 8, 2021
by Neil Page
£9.99
132 pages - softback

"Contrary to the myth, the Luftwaffe of the Second World War was not a 'mighty force' created from scratch virtually overnight. For the most part German fighter pilots were hopelessly outnumbered. Indeed the Jagdwaffe - the fighter arm - never numbered more than 1500 serviceable single seat fighters. By mid-1944 its major opponents could easily field five times that number. As with much of the German war effort, the surprising thing is not that the Luftwaffe fighter arm failed but that it performed as well as it did for as long as it did.

This publication takes a slightly different angle on the Luftwaffe 'ace' pilots and their aircraft from the traditional approach of trumpeting their triumphs and hailing their 'kill' tallies. Including many newly translated personal accounts, it details the individual experiences of some less well known Luftwaffe pilots, Gruppen and Geschwader."

Thanks! Yes the 'timing' on the II./JG 77 article is incredible. Jean-Louis wrote his feature a number of years ago and had sent me a copy. I'm not sure he knew when or if it would ever appear. 'My' text differs somewhat and the photo selection is different too..
