Ensign Raymond Edward Maynard (USNR)

Greetings all,

Seeking help with this veteran, specifically who he served with when KIA over Japan. Content has been added to his FindAGrave memorial by me. However have failed to find where and when he was KIA and who he served with at the time.

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/...edward-maynard

Speculation so far. 5th Fleet Carrier Task Force operating in water off Tokyo 16 Feb 1945. Ensign Maynard may have been in an element operating from this force when shot down.

Thank you in advance for any help and direction this topic.

VF-80, in F6F-5 70962 off the Hancock. s/d by E a/c, Imba A/F, Tokyo. Service Number 326437, KIA/BNR. Reference Hancock deck log, a/c #62; also a Names personnel loss file. I haven't tracked down the ACA report.

Enjoy!

Frank.

Re: Ensign Raymond Edward Maynard (USNR)

It was a sweep to Imba A/F by twelve VF80 F6Fs. 14 enemy aircraft were claimed but two F6Fs failed to return. The other pilot lost was Lt(jg) J.N. Molitor.

Re: Ensign Raymond Edward Maynard (USNR)

Ens. Thomas was lost on the same day but on a different mission. He was flying strike escort for an attack on Konoike A/F when he was hit from behind by a Ki-44 and forced to ditch 12 miles offshore. It is not clear whether he managed to get clear of his aircraft (72710) but he was not recovered.
