General information on romanian Do 17s

I am looking for general information on Dornier 17s delivered to Romania, all what I've been able to collect is:
10 Do 17M delivered in 1942. In October 1942 transferred to Russia with Escadrila 2 reconoastere.

Regards,
Pawel

Pawel: I am finishing my book on the Do 17 and have found no mention of Romanian Do 17s-were they ex-Yugoslav ones captured after the Balkans Campaign or, like the Finnish Do 17s, exported?

Re: General information on romanian Do 17s

Rumania received 10 Do 17m aircraft in the spring of 1942. They were not war booty so they were most likely ex. Luftwaffe aircraft.

Some say a/c all came from BFS 6, but this information is probably based on photograph showing badge on engine cover of one of Romanian machines.

Chriss, could you tell some more about the scope of the book?

Kind regards,
Pawel

Re: General information on romanian Do 17s

Pawel: The book is a photo album (200 photos) but as you can guess, post Barbarossa, there was very little Do 17-wise. Boris Ciglic has been very helpful with Croatian Do 17s but photos from 1941 and Russia are very few and far between

Re: General information on romanian Do 17s

Pawel, Chris, et al

Concerning Dornier Do 17s supplied to Roumania, there is substantial documentation on this subject to be found within National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), Microfilm Technical Publication T-405, Roll No. 56. The file consists of original correspondence, TWXs, memoranda, etc. from the RLM, the Luftwaffe, and various Roumanian authorities concerning the delivery of Do 17s (Do 17Ms, as I recall) to Roumania and under what terms. Individual aircraft and engines to be supplied are mentioned. Although not a huge amount of material, what there is is primary, fascinating, revealing, and appears not to have been explored or exploited by researchers to date. To try to publish on the overall history of the Do 17 without consulting this file would be a very great mistake.

I own a copy of NARA T-405, Roll No. 56 and would be pleased to make a horse trade of paper copies printed from the film in return for equivalent primary documentation such as FB pages containing solid original Stammkennzeichen and Werknummern data for the Bf 109, Bf 110, Ju 87, or Ju 52.

Best,

RA

Re: General information on romanian Do 17s

Rabe, thank you for the valuable information. Did you by any chance saw anything similar concerning Bulgarian and Croatian export-Dorniers?

Kind regards,
Pawel
