Hi Franck.
As Steve has written, I would expect that number to be 00708335. The zero between the digit 7 and 8 was often omitted in paperwork, even in official engine documents. In this case, the / instead of the zero is interesting. If Steve has got many examples of this in his records then that is helpful. However, there is no doubt in my mind that this will have been an 8-digit serial number, 00708335 which should be a Genshagen DB 605 built in June 1944.
The 1014 number would also tie-in with this engine being a DB 605 AS version and so it would be the 1014th AS built, and I expect that this engine was built new as an AS. The motor serial number and the /AS number 1014 both fit into the sequences.
Was it built as an ASM? This is difficult to know without the original engine log card. However, there are only minor differences on the engine for the fitting of the MW50, and many early AS engines will have been modified for use with MW 50. The Daimler-Benz PROVISIONAL instructions for modification of the DB 605 A and AS in the Bf 109 G with MW50 were dated 6.5.44 and were properly issued on 20.6.44.
The instructions state that the engine type with the simple modifications is changed from AS to ASM, and A to AM.
I hope that information is useful.

Cheers

Chris

Re: List of DB 605A engine construction numbers?

The recently recovered Dunai-made DB 605A, fitted to a Hungarian-made Bf 109Ga-6, has a large red M in front of the construction number applied on the engine side (00400342). What is the meaning of the red M? Note: it's not Methanol. Thanks.

Hi Dénes,

Yes, that red painted "M" is interesting. Unfortunately, I have not found an explanation in the Instand or Reparatur-Anleitung documents. 00400342 would seem to be built in early October 1943, so it could have been built to the standard for full power rating. Also, it might possibly also have had repair or overhaul. But these are just thoughts, I do not have any more info.
BTW, how do you know it was not a later modified Methanol engine please?
Best Wishes,

SM

I have deduced the same factory/engine code relationships for the DB601A-F so far. The 1xxxx block is, I think, Berlin Marienfelde Werk 90 but this has very few numbers in the data that I have, despite production of 1,184 DB600 and 2,762 DB601. BTW, Werke 40 was the Truck plant-although who knows if they made parts for the Aero engine Werke at times?
May I ask if your factory (the three-letter Hersteller) code info is rock solid? I don't have much independent cross-reference on those?
Thanks for posting your info, I am trying to corelate all my data independently and see how the 605 info ties in. Cheers

Hi everyone,
I am pleased to report some interesting data about DB 601 E and F production at Berlin Marienfelde Werk 90 (DBM).
As you see in my post #80 above, I postulated DBM as the manufacturing plant for block 1xxxx engines. This is despite the BIOS report data that shows Marienfelde ceasing "DB 601" production in August 1941 and not being listed for DB 605 production at all in that report (which was compiled for BIOS by DB Stuttgart just after the end of the War in Europe).
During investigation of a main bearing cap held by the Freeman Field Museum in USA, and recorded on the "WW2 Aviation.net" website, this cap was identified as being from engine Werk-Nr 14366 with the date 6/1942.
Great assistance was given by member Steve Sheflin and he supplied a listing of close Wk.Nr from his data. This information showed not only the engine types (DB 601 E and F) but also included two references to DBM, one also with a Typenschild showing Berlin Marienfelde Werk 90. So, the combined information shows that DBM were producing these engines there until at least mid 1942, despite the BIOS report having no record.
Many thanks to Steve Sheflin for his generous help with his data, which is listed here;
E 14125 DBM?
E 14259
F 14304
F 14337
(E/F 14366 Build date 6/1942, No 1 Main bearing cap)
E-1 14379 DBM, Werk 90 Berlin Marienfelde (Typenschild)
F 14396
F 14406 or 14408*

Cheers

SM
