Re: Operation Jubilee aircrew list

Steve,

Thanks for that additional name. As for the Australian aircrew, I'm sure that there were more involved, but as you say most ORB's aren't too detailed when it comes to identifying the nationalalities of the pilots. Hopefully an Australian expert out there could give me some more information?

Well I've been researching the operation for the past six years, so hopefully a book will arrive at the end, but I'll have to get some interest from a publisher first!

Thanks again,

Regards

Steve

Re: Operation Jubilee aircrew list

A few comments.
S/L Jan Eugeniusz Ludwik Zumbach is missing from the list.
Skalski at the time was A/S/L, being promoted to S/L in 1943. I have had access to his personal files, so I could have check it, contrary to the other airmen on the list.
Sobanski of Polish nationality and citizenship was at the time with RCAF, later transferred to USAAF and KIA 6/6/1944.

Re: Operation Jubilee aircrew list

Franek,

Thanks for your comments; S/Ldr Zumbach is on the list as C/O of 303 Sqn, but I'll amend his rank as A/S/Ldr. I'll also note Sgt Sobanski's later death. Do you know what unit he was serving with at the time of his death?

Regards

Steve

Re: Operation Jubilee aircrew list

Steve, I do not know if Zumbach was A/S/L or S/L at the time. Skalski definetelly was. Sobanski died as O.C. 334 FS 4 FG.

Franek,

Thanks for that. I see on the ABMC site that he's buried under the name Winslow Michael Sobanski.

Steve

A possible explanation for why there were few RAAF pilots in UK based RAF squadrons during August 1942....... Many experienced Australian fighter pilots had been recalled home earlier in the year to defend against the Japanese. Most were filtered into 75 & 76 Sqns RAAF and were fighting at Milne Bay in August. In June of the same year 452 & 457 Sqns had also been requested to return home and defend the Northern coastline eventually forming No.1 Spitfire Wing with 54 Sqn RAF. Meanwhile there were still three Australian manned fighter squadrons in the Middle East – 3 Sqn RAAF, 450 & 451 Sqs. During the Dieppe raids the sole remaining Australian equipped day-fighter unit in the UK was 453 Sqn which was in the process of ‘working up’. All these movements may help explain why there were relatively few Australians attached to RAF squadrons during Operation Jubilee.

Re: Operation Jubilee aircrew list

Drew,

Thanks for those.

With regard to 453 Sqn, by default they did have a link to the Dieppe raid. It is noted in the ORB that due 'to the fact that a large number of the squadrons aircraft were lent to 222 Sqn for use at Dieppe' they carried out little flying between the 15th and 20th August. The loan aircraft (number not identified) were not returned until the 23rd.

Regards,

Steve
