Unknown Luftwaffe Emblem

I picked this up recently form the UK. It apparantly came from an Me109 from 3/LG2 that crashed in 1940 during BoB.

I have owned enough WW2 aircraft skin to know that the aluminum and paint is 100% original. The problem is it is not an LG2 emblem from what I know. Possibly a personal emblem?

Any thoughts would be great!

Re: Unknown Luftwaffe Emblem

Not wishing to pour cold water, but are you sure about its originality? I hope for your sake its "OK"....but....!

It is remarkably similar to an item painted by the late Alf Batt. His inspiration for this piece being the well known image of Ltn Striberny's Me 109 being dug out of the ground on or around 8 July 1940.

I think there has been at least one other thread here about his artwork.

Re: Unknown Luftwaffe Emblem

Hi Andy,

For sure not Alf's. From what I recall, most of his work was spot on, and this emblem is not exact (compared to the "textbook" emblem). See the logo at this link:

The brushstrokes, paint flaking and oxidation are consitent with other original painted skins I have found of the era. There are remains of some melted rubber on the back (possibly from a fuel tank)...

here are some better pics:
