Ofw W. Kleine, September 9, 1940

Acording to de Deutsche Dienststelle, Kleine was a pilot with Stab/KG.3 and died on this day.

Does anyone know what plane he was flying (Do-17Z3?), werknummer, etc. And who were his fellow crewman. What was their target and who shot them down.

Any help would be apriciated

Dennis

Re: Ofw W. Kleine, September 9, 1940

Nothing on the 9 but according to Mason's "Battle over Britain" in the evening of the 7 the Do 17 Z-3 WNr 2619 5K+DA of Stab KG 3 was reported to have been shot down by Flak in London area. Hptm Ötting (Staka) and Ofw Kleine killed, Uffz Völkert and Fw Hubert missing.

This aircraft is not listed in "The Blitz then and now", so in fact crashed into the sea. Hptm Friedrich Ötting and Ofw Walter Rheine are both buried in Ysselsteyn, Netherlands, and their death date is given as the 7th of September.

Oeps, you are right Laurent it is the seventh of the ninth month.
Kleine was originally buried at Den Haag but is now at Ysselstein BH-5-105.

Thank you for your input,
Dennis

Dear Dennis, Peter and Laurent,

Some minor details:

Hptm Ötting (with Umlaut!) washed ashore on 26th September near Bergen aan Zee (not Bergen op Zoom). According to the grave reports he carried a Mae West and a lace with a medallion with the inscription "Hals und Beinbruch, deine Lisa". He was buried on 27th September on the cemetery of Bergen.

Dennis, would you contact me off-line please?

Kind regards,
Hans Nauta
