Re: Photo Albatros D.III

Hello,

Currently on ebay are another two photos of Albatros D.III:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/1-Weltkrieg-...oAAOSw0qFfNABX

https://www.ebay.de/itm/1-Weltkrieg-...p2047675.l2557

The first photo looks like D.780/17 - another Jasta 24 machine based on the rear of the card.

The second machine I don't recognise, but another Jasta 24 machine?

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo Albatros D.III

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of an Albatros D.III with an O as a personal marking at:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/org-Foto-1-W...UAAOSwP4Nf1g4y

Has anyone seen this machine before and can therefore help to identify the unit, individual or serial number?

Regards,

Clint

Clint

Just to argue a little, I am not 100% certain that our 'O' actually is a D.V.
The gap between the fuselage and upper wing feels a little too large and the fin is awkward. Just like a cross between the D.III and D.V

The dead give away, slab side or oval is not really visible due to the quality of the photo (or scan)

What makes you certain?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Albatros D.III

Hi Stig,

I'm less than 100% certain it's a D.V, I just felt that the rudder was too curved for a D.III especially when comparing it to 'X' But error is definitely conceivable on my part.A D.III (OAW) perhaps? With regard to the fuselage/wing gap again due to the angle difficult to be certain, but I thought narrower than 'X'. What would be really useful to know is who the pilot 'O' was and the machines he flew. This seller seems to be selling quite a few items recently, fingers crossed 'o' appears with a serial.

Clint

Re: Photo Albatros D.III

Yes it is a tricky one.

There were D.III using D.V fins, so I have become wary of that.
But I have never been very good at the small details which others seems to have such an ease with.

Just in this case I felt sort of uneasy.....

Cheers
Stig

Hello,

Currently on ebay are a cluster of Albatros D.III of Jasta Boelcke. At least In the foreground is D.795/17 known to have been flown by Ltn Hans Eggers of that unit at :

Re: Photo Albatros D.III

Clint the 2 on the right look like Frommherz and Kempf.

Re: Photo Albatros D.III

Hi Nick,

I absolutely agree the aircraft with the diagonal band is the machine of Frommherz.I also absolutely agree that you're eyesight is better than mine if you can identify the other aircraft as that of Kempf,so I'm happy to take your word for it on that basis.

In your reading, have you at any time come across the serials of those two machines? Also, given your better eyesight can you make anything of the serial on the second machine back on the left?

Regards,

Clint
