B-17 42-97148 and KU Grid Square 93 GU 7

Many years ago, I investigated the crash of B-17 42-97148 for one of the crewmen involved. I tracked down the fates of all the crew and was able to contact all the were then still alive.

One thing that puzzled me was the KU 2248 report that was attached to the crash report MACR 5903.
The crash location was described as in the woods at/near Wennigsen-Mark (Wennigser-Mark?).
The KU report also gives the crash location as “grid square 93 GU 7”.
The grid square given seems to be given in a form something like the Jagergradnetz system as discussed here:

https://www.gyges.dk/reporting_grids.htm

and the LUMA links may be able to translate it into latitude and longitude, but I don’t quite see how.
Any ideas???

The full 16 page MACR 5903 with the KU pages (see page 16):

The MACR in two pieces:
Pages 1 – 3 (only) of MACR 5903:

KU pages of MACR 5903 are in MACR 5904

MACR 5904 (see pages 25-37 for the KU 2248 which should be with MACR 5903:

Google maps of the area 52°16'15.6"N 9°31'22.6"E

(In the 1940s maps, Wennigser-Mark was just a few buildings, it has been built up a lot since then.)

Re: B-17 42-97148 and KU Grid Square 93 GU 7

Hi, RSwank,

this coordinate code was a mix of GNMV and JMN.

GT LON: 9
GT LAT: 3

JMN: 05 Ost Sued GU 7 3

Since no Meldetrapez cipher is given it is only accurate to Kleintrapez resolution,
at this latitude: 6 x 5 nautical miles.
The centers of the 4 possible Meldetrapeze are:

52 19' 23'' N
9 31' 15'' E

52 19' 23'' N
9 36' 15'' E

52 16' 53'' N
9 31' 15''E

52 16' 53'' N
9 36' 15'' E

best wishes,
FrankieS

FrankieS, Thanks for the explanation. I think probably the last one is closest to Wennigser-Mark.

Dear Rolland,

for what Google Maps gives as Wennigser Mark,
this corresponds all to these different modality coordinates:

52.271389 N
9.525278 E

52° 16' 17.0" N
9° 31' 31.0" E

GNMV 05 Ost 93677b

JMN 05 Ost Sued GU77b

so probably, the second last one of my formerly given,

best wishes,
FrankieS
