Spitfire chased over Italy on 7. & 16.1.1944
Hi all,
I am trying to identify the Axis pursuers when the RAF Spitfire PR has been chased in two cases: 7. 1. 1944 at sometime between 09.30-12.30 over Italian town Ferentino by 5 unidentified single engine aircraft. I am interested if they were from Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana or Luftwaffe and if no chance for the particular identification, would be possible to identify the unit at least? I would see JG4, JG 27, JG51, JG 53 or JG77 as possible candidates. 16. 1. 1944 at sometime between 08.55-12.25 over Italian town Centocelle by two Bf 109. I am also interested in indetification in this case. The Spitfire escaped unscratched in both cases so I am afraid there will be very little chance to find out anything in Axis records. Anyway I will be very thankful for any additional information and/or confirmation/exclusion of any unit. TIA Pavel

Re: Spitfire chased over Italy on 7. & 16.1.1944
Hi all,
the RAF pilot has sketched marking of one Bf 109 met on 16.1.1944 over Centocelle as follows: Anyone would be able to help me with identification of the unit? It looks to me like a marking of Stab I./JG 4 but it was used on Bf 109 in 1942 and in 1944 the Stab had already Fw 190. Any ideas much appreciated. TIA Pavel

Re: Spitfire chased over Italy on 7. & 16.1.1944
Pavel,
Stab I./JG 4 was not equipped with Fw 190 A while the Gruppe was deployed in Italy, or ever if I remember correctly. Regards, Sinisa |

Thnak you Sinisa, so I would suppose the idea with Stab I./JG 4 might be correct in my further research.

Exclusively Bf 109s. However Stab SG 4 had Fw 190s, as did I. and II./SG 4.
