1 1st James M. Caviness Jr. - DNB 12 April 1944 - crash England44

On 12 April 1944 1st Lt James L. Caviness Jr. (O-24814) was killed in a light plane crash in England, along with the pilot.
He was a liaison officer with HQ Corps Artillery, VII Corps, US Army (see https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/...es-m.-caviness).

Looking for more info about this crash, and name of pilot in particular. US Army airplane most likely, so perhaps an L-4 type?

Lt Caviness is buried at the Cambridge American Cemetery. At first sight the other names of 12 April 1944 have no connection with above accident, but text on findagrave seems to suggest that pilot died on a later date.

Thanks for any leads.

Regards,

Leendert

Thanks Dennis, Rolland.

Was not familiar with this section of the NARA website and it looks very promising for further searches.

Text for Lt Adams on wwiimemorial says they were fired upon by a 0.50 machine gun while on take-off...

Hmmmm.

Doubtful he was 'shot down' if he Died Non Battle in UK in April 1944.

But yes... those burial reports are very useful for ETO losses up to I think Dec 1944. I cannot recall when they start but I could produce a list of links I imagine. It is possible to search for serial numbers and surnames if the typeface is clear. As with all OCR text there are errors

Re: 1 1st James M. Caviness Jr. - DNB 12 April 1944 - crash England44

HQ VIII Corps moved from Kidderminster (Camp Bewdley) to Marbury Hall near Northwich on 12 April 1944.
Accident may be placed at former town/camp.

Airplane being shot at indeed mysterious. Text with Lt Caviness makes no such reference.
