Trying to ID date and circumstances of He111 that crashed at Oetingen in the muncipality of Gooik, in central Belgium, probably mid-May 1940

Hello,

Another crash mystery that we're trying to resolve, this time for an He111 with the a/c letter "K" that crashed at the rather specific location of Oetingen in the municipality of Gooik, in central Belgium, almost certainly around mid-May 1940. It obviously came down behind Allied lines as both swastikas were souvenired.

Our EoE loss indexes for He111s don't ID this one, but some of our Belgian loss experts should be able to help with this.

Who can solve this one?

Hello,

I've queried Peter Taghon, who has done a lot of work on LW losses in Belgium during this period, and he knows nothing about this crash. He suggests that the location might not be correct.

So, does anyone have any evidence that might help put a date and unit on this loss, and confirm a location?

BAHAAT is no longer active and the Brussels Museum will lead you (if they are willing) to a dead end or to the aircraft crashsites 'old' workgroup which is 'dusty'...

Taghon is your best bet for May '40 or perhaps a local researcher...

ClinA-78,

Thanx for the tip off. I'm so overwhelmed right now I don't need to be chasing any red herrings. I've already checked with Peter Taghon (my first thought), and he knows nothing about this crash, which is unusual for something in Belgium. I'm still hoping that someone who has researched crashes in that local area will respond to my request. As I said earlier, Peter T. questions whether the info in the caption is correct, but it's an very specific citation.
