LW losses, 11 june 1944

Hi,

On 11 june 1944 during night patrol over Omaha n°611 sqdn claim two Junker 88. The combat report of the Free French pilot gives time at 2307.

In the book FCWD part 4, John Foreman states nothing for these claims and in the excellent work of David Clark "Angel Eight Normandy Air War Diary", there are any details of these destroyed aircraft as told in the ORB !

Is there a possibility to match these two Junker 88 with some LW known losses ?

TIA.

Bertrand

Re: LW losses, 11 june 1944

Thanks John. One of them could be the « Ju88 » described as destroyed « I saw a terrific flash and later a large fire burning on the ground ». Ju188 of KG6 are probable. The aircraft of 1./KG54 is not in the vicinity of Invasion front. Chaillevois was at 450 east of the sector.

The difficulty you have is it was the night of 10-11 June. Thurner was lost 10-11 Jun as was Schössner. There was also a loss suffered by 1/KG 66 apparently to Flak at 0400 hrs and a Ju 188 of KG 2. Claims that night were 3 Ju 188s, a Ju 88 and a He 177 destroyed whilst 130 and 611 Sqn claimed another 3!

Re: LW losses, 11 june 1944

Chris,

You are right. Date of the combat report is 10 june 1944. So LW losses are in the night of 10/11.

Re: LW losses, 11 june 1944

Hello Gentlemen - I was lucky enough to recently get the Iron Cross Second Class award document for Hans Dahlsen. He was decorated posthumously for the loss of his aircraft and crew on the night of June 10/11. His award came on June 19, 1944 by way of IX. Fliegerkorps. Since this thread was originally started, do you think it's safe to assume his plane was among the two brought down that night by n°611 sqdn ?

Best,
Brian
