Me 262 Radio Equipment?
Hi all;
had a question about the radio equipment in an Me 262. The standard "A" had a dipole antenna hung between the canopy and tail, a loop antenna on the upper rear fuselage, a "morane" antenna under the right wing just behind the main wheel well (quarter-wave?) and a smaller antenna under the rear fuselage (also quarter-wave?) From what I've read, the dipole and the "morane" were associated with the FuG 16 (XY?) and the antenna under the rear fuselage was associated with an FuG 25 IFF transmitter? So my questions are, is the above correct? Why two antennas (dipole and "morane") for the FuG 16 (separate transmit and receive?) What radio was the df loop associated with (FuG 16 is cited by some sources?) Did the IFF squawk all the time, or did it listen for a query and respond? Any info appreciated! Paul |

Re: Me 262 Radio Equipment?
The "loop" antenna is actually a homing antenna, with the loop being fixed. It was part of the FuG 16 ZY system, the 'Z' was for 'Ziel'. The instrument for this was the AFN2, with a vertical bar to indicate the general direction of the beacon being homed on, and a horizontal bar to indicate a rough distance from the beacon.
The Morane antenna and the wire antenna were part of the send-receive part of the radio that included integration of the 'Y' control system. The Morane antenna was the transmission antenna, and the wire antenna was the receiver antenna. The above is from "Bordfunkgeraet FuG 16Z, ZS, ZE und ZY" of November 1944. All the best, George |
