D-Day RAF Dakota Losses

Hi,

Seeking squadron and serial numbers of the RAF Dakota's lost the D-Day.

So far I have found that 9 were lost on the 6th and a further 2 on the 7th, makes a total of 11.

I have by Squadron so far -

48 Sqdn - 1
233 Sqdn - 3
271 Sqdn - 1 7th
512 Sqdn - 2, 6th + 1, 7th
575 Sqdn - 1

I think that I need 1 from 233 Sqdn and 1 from 271 Sqdn .

Anyone know the serials/Sqdns ? or if there were more RAF Dakoto losses ?

Alex

Re: D-Day RAF Dakota Losses

Hallo Alex,

Just went through the Air-Britain RAF Aircraft Registers looking for Dakotas lost on 6th and 7th June 1944. I found a total of 10, 7 on the 6th and 3 on the 7th.

I think the extra one to add to your list would be KG329 of 233 Squadron lost on the 7th to flak near Ranville.

A quick summary from the above sources would showthe following;

6th June 1944.
48 Sqn. KG426
233 Sqn KG356, KG424 and KG429
512 Sqn FZ690 and KG347
575 Sqn KG434

7th June 1944.
233 Sqn KG329
271 Sqn FZ667
512 Sqn KG480

No mention of any RAF Dakota losses on these two days in OVER THE BEACHES by John Foreman.

Regards,

Martin Gleeson.

Re: D-Day RAF Dakota Losses

Hello Martin,

Thanks for reply. I had all but given up on getting any.

The one you had that I missed was from 233 Sqdn i.e: KG329, I will look this one up now.

I am looking for two from 271 Sqdn lost on the 7th June.

One c/l Friston on return ,

and

One s/d by Allied AA, (not the 512 Sqdn KG480 that was lost to Navy AA on the 7th).

Thanks again

Alex
