RAF Fighter Sqdn structure - 1940
Please can anybody advise the RAF fighter squadron standard structure in 1940, I believe it was CO = S/Ldr, then "A" and "B" Flights led by a Flight Lt with each flight comprising 2 sections of three pilots/aircraft - so a total of 6 per flight (12 or 13 per squadron).
Did the S/Ldr lead one flight and a Flight Lt lead the other or would there be a Flight Lt for each flight of 6 aircraft plus the CO's aircraft. Was there a standard where particular colours (such as Red or Yellow Section) were with a particular flight ? Did squadron's have their own groundcrew or were they shared across the Wing? Did each squadron have its own Adjutant, Intell Officer, Engineering officer, etc ? Thank you |

Re: RAF Fighter Sqdn structure - 1940
I would agree with your suggestion for organisation, but there would be extra aircraft and even more pilots in the establishment. Each flight would have its own leader, usually a Flight Lt.
It was usual that the same section colours were applied to the Flights - I cannot say it was universal. There was no Wing organisation at this time. All squadrons did indeed possess their own ground crew and ground staff: the adjutant was in many ways the backbone of the unit, as he would normally serve much longer with the unit than any of the flying staff. |
