Can anyone help with details of Handley page Hampden coded VN+X that was captured by the Germans in fairly complete condition. Unit, serial number, date, location etc.

Thanks

Re: Handley Page Hampden VN+X

Hello Mikael,
VN-X is P2070 of 50th Squ. RAF missing on 26th of August 1940.
The aircraft landed somewhere in Palatina (Pfalz), the german province on the left side of the river Rhine. The left wing was damaged badly. I can not imagine that it had been repaired and used by the germans.

Re: Handley Page Hampden VN+X

hi Yumimoto,

Thanks for your respons. The photo of the aircraft that I have shows the right wing in good shape, with unbent props, unfortunately the left wing is not visible but it appears that it was a wheels down landing since the aircraft is with extended wheels unless the aircraft was lifted and then the landing gear extended, but there is no such equipment visible around the aircraft.

Best regards
/Mike

Re: Handley Page Hampden VN+X

Forcelanded due to shortness of fuel; for the location I've near Laumersheim, SW of Worms, about 06.34h. No info on use of a/c by the Germans.

Henk.

Re: Handley Page Hampden VN+X

Hello,

the landing place was Lautersheim near Grünstadt, not Laumersheim near Worms.
For details the link http://www.aircrewremembered.com/wawn-robert.html is helpful.
