Base of Ju88A-5, L1+HK, 2./LG1

Hello folks,

maybe someone can help me with this plane.
In Eric Mombeek's Luftwaffe Gallery No1 page 29 is a nice colour shot of a Ju88A-5 with night camouflage. According the booklet the plane was used for raids in the Libyan desert. No time is given when the photo was taken.

I would like to know when the photograph was made and were the 2./LG1 was based at that time.

Cheers, Simon

I. Gruppe was based in Greece, on Crete and on Sicily. It was never based in North Africa. But it did send Ketten, Schwarme and even an entire Staffel to North Africa for short periods of up to a week. The Gruppe used the North African airfields to stage missions and refuel. Here are some notes:

I./LG 1

20 Nov 41: Ju 88A-4 (L1+JH) FTR from ops – no details, 4 MIA; another A-4 crashed at Fp. Benina near Benghazi on return from ops, 40%.
21 Nov 41: Athens-Eleusis - temporarily reassigned from X. Fliegerkorps to Fliegerführer Afrika this date and most of the flying component transferred to Benina in Libya to reinforce III. Gruppe in supporting ground operations, but returned to Eleusis on 26 November.
10 Dec 41: elements at Derna.
02 Jun 42: elements at Derna.
03 Sep 42: elements operating from Quasaba.
18 Nov 42: elements at Sidi el Magrun.

Unless you know an exact date for the photo, it will be impossible to identify the landing ground. In North Africa, the airfields and landing grounds nearly all looked alike: a flat expanse of desert with camel thorn and scrub, no infrastructure and no signs.
