Re: US Air Transport Command a/c serials 1943-1944
Pavel
For 41-5196 the USAAF record card states it was received on 31 Dec 1942 and flown to La Guardia airfield 3 Feb 1943. It was assigned to the Carribean Transport Wing 1 May 1943 and received by it om May 29th. The record card is fuzzy when it returned to USA since next line is stated it was lost from Morrison Field, FL to RFC Augusta on 7.11.1944. This is far too early and since the date 7 Nov appears on other cards as simply returned to Morrison without any mentioning of any delivery to RFC it is most likely a mistake by the scribe and I would say it actually is the return date to USA. What it did while in the hands of the Carribean Wing, I don't know. What is known is that later in the war (1944) the Carribean Wing handled a large number of ferry mission via Accra to either North Africa and India. However the record card is silent regarding any delivery to these areas (if it had happened it should have been in there), but I would say it is not impossible this aircraft was used to haul crews back and forth from Africa. You would need some unit records to confirm that. Cheers Stig |

Alex and Stig, thank you both for urther info.
I think I will stick with this candidate as I was not able to find any other which will fit. Meanwhile I have also found several photos of Fold3.com confirming this type has been used on this route. Pavel

Ancestry.com Florida arrivals database has this aircraft arriving in Aug and Nov 1943. What is your mans surname
Or is that database your source? Note if you search only for 7 August 43 you see same aircradt recorded as 41-5196 or 5196 and other combinations during the year
