Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s

Some photos on the internet have enough resolution to enlarge them and 'tweak' the colours, light and 'clarity'. This is the first of a number of a number of posts:

http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=787

1. Me 262 V3 000003 PC+UC. Manfred Jurleit on p. 15 of Strahljaeger Me 262 Die Technikgeschichte, (1992), gives the caption for this photo as "Vorbereitung der Me 262 V-3 zum ersten Flug" [18 July 1942]. However, Smith & Creek, Me 262 Volume One, (1997), p. 103, says "This photo is thought to show the Me 262 V3 after it was rebuilt following the accident on 11 August 1942 when it was badly damaged. The aircraft returned to flight testing on 20 March 1943 and could be distinguished by the painting of its Versuchs (experimental) number on the fin."

2.Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 170059. Smith & Creek, Me 262 Volume Two, (1998), p. 238, captioned this photo as: "On 3 August 1944 Oblt. Hans-Guenter Mueller of Erprobungskommando 262 flew this Me 262, W.Nr. 170059, fom Leipheim to Lechfeld. He is seen here standing on the wing just prior to the flight and before operational markings had been applied to the aircraft."

3. Under the heading SPECULATION, this photo may depict Me 262 A-2a W.Nr. 130180 9K+BL and Me 262 A-2a W.Nr. 130026 9K+AL taking off from Schwabisch-Hal for Juvincourt on 23 August 1944. However, "A" was seriously damaged in a notlandung near Charleville-Mezieres. If so, then "A" was hurriedly evacuated by road at the end of the month to Volkel for repairs.

best regards,

Jim

8. Me 262 V5 W.Nr. 262 000 0005 PC+UE with a fixed tricycle undercarriage. Used 12 to 25 July 1943 to test two Rheinmetall-Borsig R 109-502 RATO engines of 500 KG thrust each to reduce take-off distances. It was found that by angling the rockets by 8 degrees to the flight attitude the boosters could reduce take-off by 340 metres to 510 metres. (O'Connel, p. 18.)

9. Me 262 V6 W.Nr. 130001 VI+AA Smith & Creek, Me 262 Volume One, (1997), p.157 gives this caption: "The assembled entourage including Göring and Messerschmitt walk forward to inspect the Me 262 V6 on 2 November 1943."

They were to help Herlitzius' Me 262 lift two cement dummy 500 kg bombs into the air.

17. For this photo, Wolfgang Samuel, American Raiders, (2004), p. 224, gives this caption:
"Jim Holt and Bob Anspach facing, Ken Dahlstrom with back to camera, in front of Wilma Jeanne, Lechfeld, June 10, 1945.

22. Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 110836 Black L "Doris". Note the two white gun rectangles beneath the cannon access door and the lack of bomb racks.

23. Me 262 A-1a/U3 W.Nr. 500098 White 27 "Joanne" being fuelled.

Group photo with the line-up of Me 262s at Lechfeld on 10 June 1945. Wolfgang Samuel in American Raiders, (2004), page 264 gives: "Watson with Fred Hillis and Willie Hoffmann to his right, Jim Holt and Karl Baur to his left. L to R front: Dahlstrom, Strobell, Anspach, two sergeants, Roy Brown." The two sergeants are possibly Henry Nolte and Holme Mcord, see Smith & Creek, Me 262 Volume Four, page 809.

http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=812

25. The line-up of Me 262s at Lechfeld, 10 June 1945. Possibly the order is "Vera (Hoffmann), "Joanne" (Hillis), "Pauline" (Anspach), "Dennis" (Holt), "Connie" (Brown), "Marge" (Dahlstrom), "Doris" (Baur), "Beverley Anne" (Strobell) and Wilme Jeanne" (Watson). Note that a photo found in Smith & Creek, p. 830, shows "Marge" immediately behind "Connie" in the line-up.

http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=813

26. Another view of the front of the line-up. Note that the upper tail-tip on "Vera"'s port side seems to be a solid light marking, not seen on the starboard side.

27. A line-up of Me 262s of III./EJG 2 at Lechfeld, probably late December 1944 or very early January 1945. Note the pattern of the kaulquappe (tadpole) camouflage of experimental wooden tail fins. The nearest aircraft being towed is a Me 262 a-2a (one white gun rectangle) White 1, possibly W.Nr. 170047.

http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=818

28. On the evening of 29 April 1945, at about 1800 hrs., Ofw. Rothert of 2./Fl.U.G. 1 transferred the same Me 262 A-2a (one white gun rectangle) White 1 from München-Brunnthal to Innsbruck-Reichenau where this photo was taken.

http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=816

29. A view of the starboard side of White 1 showing a fresh late-war camouflage has been newly applied. It seems to have consisted of an overspray of the fuselage, followed by a squiggle pattern of dark colour and a new yellow band, then another light overspray of an opaque anti-dazzle paint.

http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=817

30. A view of the port side of White 1. Note that the "white S", signifying that it is not suitable for combat, has been moved back to below the horizontal stabilizer while it is missing from the starboard side.

http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=819

31. Another kaulquappe-tailed Me 262 A-1a of III./EJG 2 White 4, possibly W.Nr. 170306.
