POW photos

Hello!

I am in the process of researching the loss of a relative on Lancaster ND672 on the night of 22nd March 1944.

Of the seven crew on board teh Lancaster, 6 were KIA however the mid upper gunner managed to escape and became a POW. His name was Sgt Peter Velasco (sometimes cited as Ruiz-de-Velasco).

I am trying to find out a bit more on him as I have his POW repatriation report from TNA and I know he was in Stalag Luft I. But what I am trying to find is a POW photo of him. I noticed that in a lot of places there are the POW photos taken by the Germans when an airmen was captured, is there somewhere that these photos survive?

Regards,
Ashley

Re: POW photos

Hello Ashley,

There are some web sites that collect photos. Here's a sampling, which I hope will be helpful to others as well.

Here is a names catalag that list a P.D. Velasco:

Hope this helps. Can you provide other details?

Re: POW photos

I suggest you contact the 49 Squadron Association:

Re: POW photos

Hi Ed,

Thank you for your help, the website is brilliant so will try and e-mail some of the e-mail addresses that are there for other barrack members.

I am actually already a 49 squadron association member and they have given me lots of information. What I am interested to know is if the POW photos taken by the Germans of downed airmen were stored anywhere or simply lost in the chaos in the closing months of the war.

I know that Peter unfortunately passed away in 2008 and that he was living in Valpraiso, Chile. I never met or spoke to him as I didn't start to learn about this until mid-09.

I believe he was only ever in Stalag Luft 1 and that he was interrogated in Frankfurt for a while. Presumably after the war and de-mob he returned to live in Chile.

Many thanks,
Ashley
