Klemm Kl 36 A

Hi there,

This one's a bit outside the domain of TOCH, but here goes!

I'm looking for pictures of Klemm Kl 36 A touring planes used in the 1934 International Air Challenge. Amazingly, a main plate from one of the four Kl 36 participants in that event has survived. That plate is from Kl 36 A WNr. 659, D-IHAV.

Can anyone direct me to or provide a source for photos of WNr. 659. or any of the other A models that were involved in the '34 Air Challenge?

I will post a scan of D-IHAV's plate in a few days.

Thanks,
Steve

You can find a photo of a sister aircraft from that competition at http://www.sampol.de/angielski/Chall...llenge_eng.htm

Additional photos of other Kl 36 at http://www.luftarchiv.de/

Looking forward to seeing the plate!

Re: Klemm Kl 36 A

Thanks Mikael - here it is.

http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.p...fi122j&thumb=4

The plates as shown are all still riveted to an original single piece of the airplane's skin (engine cowl, fuselage?). Whoever took this souvenir did a very careful cutting job. Note the Handley Page plate in reference to Klemm's use of HP's wing slat design!

Thanks Peter - I'm not positive about D-IHAV, but that's what's stated at LuftArchiv. They also state D-IJIP for Wnr. 656, and that's the code seen in the picture Mikael mentioned.

I have to believe that photos were taken of all four of the Kl 36 A airplanes. The question is how many of those photos exist and where are they? So far it's just D-IJIP . . .

Best regards all,
Steve

Re: Klemm Kl 36 A

Hello ! You are right ,Gogh :
The D-IHAV is actually the D-IBAV
German planes at the Europa Rundflug 1934 :
Bf 108 : D-IZAN D-IMUT D-IGAK D-IJES
Fi 97 : D-IVIF D-IBYR D-IPUS D-IZUH D-IDAH
Kl 36 : D-IJIP D-IHEK D-IDIR D-IBAV

Motors were 5 x AS 17 and 8 x HM 8U

Re: Klemm Kl 36 A

- Stephen , I have got the pic of the D-IBAV in "Kurzstarter und senkrechtstarter " by Otto E Pabst in Bernard&Graefe Verlag,1984 .(Its competition number was 26)
-A little more mystery for Peter : In the book I have found D-IHEK,but looking at this pic I read HEX .The same Kl 36 or another ?

Its competition number appears to be 23.

Best regards,

Re: Klemm Kl 36 A

That's super information! The picture of D-IDIR clearly shows the HP slats along the leading edge of the wing.

The main ID plate for Kl 36 A WN. 659 (D-IBAV) lists the motor type as "HM8A".
