14th May 1943
Hello,
on this date Kiel was attacked by the 8th Air Force. A Liberator flown by Lt. John Reed was damaged in the attack but managed to fly back to the base, Shipdham. Unable to lower the undercarriage the crew bailed out and the pilot set the machine on auto-pilot over the North Sea. It was then shot down by Spitfires, possibly of a Polish squadron. Does anyone have more details of which Spitfire squadron was involved? Regards, Francis |

Re: 14th May 1943
No such event recorded in the ORBs of No. 315, 316 or 317 RAF (Polish) Squadrons on 14 May 1943. Two had B-17 escort missions, one only an uneventful scramble.

Re: 14th May 1943
Lt Reed indeed writes that when B-24 'Scrappy' (41-24014) had crossed the coast it 'was shot down by a flight of Spitfires piloted by Polish escapees..."
He evidently must have heard something to that effect later on. Regards, Leendert |
