Re: Wellington DV648

It appears the plane was in 162 Squadron in December, 1942. You can use the Preview option on the link below. Look at the first page which is for DV648. Not sure what happened to the plane as I could not find it in the next few months for the squadron. Maybe someone will have better luck.

Re: Wellington DV648

The Form 78 Shows
38MU 19/2/1942
OAPU Kemble 30/4/1942
1443 Flight 28/4/1942
Port Leith 7/5/1942
En route Middle East 13/5/1942
SOC 27/7/1944

RAF Form 78 only really covers a/c while in Home Commands

Air Britain RAF a/c DA100 to DZ999 shows
Once in Middle Ease it was on
37 Sqn
162 Sqn

Re: Wellington DV648

May I ask how the ID is made in the first place, ie how is this crash
identified as aircraft DV648?

Cheers
Stig

Stig, you need to zoom in on the tail in the photo. (I missed it at first also.) The number appears between the rudder and the horizontal stabilizer. I could not find another copy of the photo on the web.

Re: Wellington DV648

Ha, ha that was a good one Andy/Rolland

Yes I certainly missed that one. Foggy eyes no doubt....

Oh well, I checked the Gunby/Temple books and it is not in there from Dec 1942 to July 1944, meaning they didn't find it either.

The aircraft looks pretty intact so the crew probably walked away quite shaken but otherwise pretty unharmed.

Cheers
Stig

Re: Wellington DV648

I think this is DV646 of which there are a number of pics, the wreck has been slowly vandalised and the 8 is actually a 6 distorted by damage to covering.. attached is the tail of 646 from the other side .. note positions of the guns... OF course I could be wrong hehehe

Re: Wellington DV648

Well, well, so a picture can lie after all
The Air Britain serials book says DV646 force-landed 4km west of Fuka on 26 Jun 42 whilst seving with 148 Sqn.
