Lone B.17. lands at Kirmington 17.03.44 (fog diversion)
Long shot, but might anyone know from which unit this aircraft came from? Only information was it was diverted on return from a raid due to fog at home base and landed at Kirmington (home to 166 Squadron R.A.F.).

Re: Lone B.17. lands at Kirmington 17.03.44 (fog diversion)
According to the Air Force Chronology, there were no AAF heavy bomber missions on March 17, 1944.
http://paul.rutgers.edu/~mcgrew/wwii...ml/Mar.44.html There was an accident of a B-17 from the 482nd BG (Pathfinders). This is from the Fort Log: 42-97595 Del Denver 31/12/43; 1SAG Langley 23/1/44; Grenier 5/2/44; Ass 813BS-482BG [PC-E] Alconbury 19/2/44; t/o 17/3/44 for Snetterton ready to lead mission the following day w/Capt Lopez Mantoux, cp-Emerson Dyer, n-Bill Ryan{seriously injured}, b-Capt Newton Hatfield, ettg-Albt Brown, roFrancis Lynen, wg-John Campbell, wg-Chas Clark, tg-Vince Carlwicz, pass: Sgts Harley Rayner, Dan Delmonte & Cpl Harry Williams; visibility was impaired and struck tree, knocking off right stabilizer; (12RTD), Sal 18/3/44. Possibly there was another plane from the 482nd, trying to position to some other field for the next day's raid that had to divert. |

Thank you. Maybe it was on an air test and had to divert. M
