II./NJG1 Signature Help.

I have attached an image of the signature from the 'Stellungnahme des Gruppenkommandeurs' page of a 4./NJG1 Abschussmeldung, dated 06-August-1941.

I am trying to ascertain the identity of the (then) Oberleutnant signatory. I have 2 possible candidates in mind:

Hauptmann Fritz Griese
Major Heinrich Griese

I am not familiar with either of these officers assignments and I may be reading the signature wrong!

Consequently, any help whatsoever in putting a name to the signature will be very well received indeed.

Regards Richard.

Re: II./NJG1 Signature Help.

Hello Richard,

I think the signature belong to Oblt. Gresens StKpt. II.(5.) NJG 1.

Fritz Griese and Heinrich Griese didn't belong to II./NJG 1.

Regards,

René

II./NJG1 Signature Help.

Hello René

Are you sure that is the signature is that of Oberleutnant Gresens?

I have looked in the 'Nachtjagd War Diaries' and the 'Ordenstrager' and can unfortunatly find no information on this man.

Can anyone else add anything on Oberleutnant Gresens at all?

Regards Richard.

David P. Williams is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: II./NJG1 Signature Help.

Having looked at the signature, it looks like the Staffelkapitan of 11.NJG 1, Gresens. He was a friend of my good friend Georg Greiner in October 1941.

From documents I have it looks like Gresens to me.

David

II./NJG1 Signature Help.

Rene and David you have convinced me in that case that the signature is indeed that of Oberleutnant Gresens.

Do either of you know any further information at all on this man? I understand that he recorded no abschuss and was not bestowed the DKiG or Ehrenpokal however, I would like to think that there is some information out there concerning him?

Unit assignments (even his Christian name) and promotion dates etc would all be welcome.

Any help will be very well received.

Regards Richard.

Thank you for your reply on Oblt. Gresens, and also for the link to what looks like a wealth of aircrew information.

Any more for any more on Oblt. Gresens?

II./NJG1 Signature Help.

A little further research on the Tony Woods excellent 'Combat Claims and Casualties' site has uncovered the following abschuss information on Oberleutnant Gresens:

18-12-1939 0:00:00,"Oblt.","Walter","Gresens","I.","ZG 76","Wellington","25km NW Borkum","15.00","-","-","yes"

12-4-1940 0:00:00,"Oblt.","Heinz","Gresens","2.","ZG 76","Wellington","SW Stavanger-Sola","16.55","n.b.","-","no"

So it appears that Oberleutnant Walter Gresens was credited with an RAF Wellington bomber on 18-December-1939 but Oberleutnant Heinz Gresens claim for 12-April-1940 was not verified by the RLM. There is of course the possibility that these were one and the same man.

Consequently, from that information we can assume that Oberleutnant Walter Gresens did acheive an abschuss on the RAF's ill fated attack on Wilhelmshaven in December-1939, and possibly had another abschuss rejected.

I am still trying to piece together any other information on this man that might be out there, I would especially be interested in any images that might be in circulation.

All help will be very gratefully received.

Regards Richard.
