Re: Aufklärer DKiG Winners

Andy,

There was a Paul Achilles who flew with the Seefrontstaffel and Marine-Feld-Jasta V in the First World War. He claimed 8 victories in 1918. The very brief bio in "Above the Lines" by Franks, Bailey & Guest has nothing on him post-war, but this is such an unusual name that it must be the same person.

Re: Aufklärer DKiG Winners

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the info on Achilles. His rank (Obst) would also tie in with your info, as he would be quite senior by this time if it is the same individual.

Regards

Re: Aufklärer DKiG Winners

Hi Andy,

My source is "Die Trager Des Deutchen Kreuzes In Gold" by Horst Schiebert and published by Podzun Pallas, I believe it was from the early 80's no longer in print but copies do exist. The is another book "Die Trager Des Deutschen Kreuzes In Gold der Luftwaffe 1941-45, published byScherzer Militar Verlag, this is still available with a quick web search. Both books are in German.

I should note that I did see a few descrepancies with the dates of awarding for some of the above gents however even the two books are not consistant.

Jeremy

btw my wife and I have tipped a few pints of Beamish in your town of Cork.

Re: Aufklärer DKiG Winners

Hi Jeremy,

What is your opinion of Die Trager Des Deutschen Kreuzes In Gold der Luftwaffe 1941-45, would someone with only rudimentary German be able to make use of it (ie units, dates etc)?

Thanks again.

Best Regards

Andy Fletcher

P.S. I'm originally from England but since moving to Cork I've developed quite a taste for Murphy's.

Cheers

Hi Andy

I am sure that you would find Die Träger des Deutschen Kreuzes in Gold der Luftwaffe 1941-1945 by Veit Scherzer very easy to interpret. The volume lists names of Deutsches Kreuz holders alpabetically and the unit they served with and the date they received the award and also by unit then alphabetically and date awarded. I secured my copy from Helion in the UK.

Cheers
Gordon

Re: Aufklärer DKiG Winners

Hi Gordon,

Thanks for that, you've convinced me (not as it took much), another one to add to the list.

Probably a silly question but does it state their crew positions (flugzeugfuehrer etc).

Cheers

Thumbs up Re: Aufklärer DKiG Winners

Hi Andy,

Gordon's assessment of the book is spot on, I would have given the same response, worth the purchase. To your point regarding their job within the crew i.e. Beobachter etc. this is unfortunately lacking.

Cheers

Jeremy
