Do try to find relatives of the US pilots who claimed that day....maybe on their Logbooks they wrote different information that the Squadron Diaries do not have....and you may find pictures of them too...so you can have a more broader picture.

Sadly...something that was really common around that time....a dozen or plus LW fighters against 400+ bombers and 100+ escort fighters....One needed Courage to take off against those odds, really....

Gentlemen,

for the moment many thanks for the outstanding response and helpful hints.

It will take time to find the answers. Different time-schemes, different perception of the location (defending fighters vs. attacking bombers with their fighters) all this has to be taken into account to find Karls history.

I would be glad to find some answers in order to summ it up in a small story of his short life which I would like to present to the Knichels and interested people on the occasion of Karls 100th birthday in October 2019.
