Oblt. Paris of III./JG 6 vs. Typhoons on 25 Dec 1944
Danny Parker in his book "To Win the Winter Sky" includes the following info under 25 December 1944: "The Gruppe [III./JG 6] ran into the Typhoons of 193 Sqn near Quackenbrück. The British claimed one downed German fighter which was almost certainly the mount of Oblt. Paris of the Gruppenstab. Paris was seriously wounded and died a few weeks later".
At the Kracker Luftwaffe Archive I found the following details: Oblt. Helmut Paris, Stab III./JG 6, Fw 190A-8 Werk # 980545. Seriously wounded 25 December, 1944; aerial combat with Typhoons of No.193 Sq. at Quackenbrück; DOW 9 February, 1945 (JG-6 List & LOCS). So far so good, but I have some doubts. First of all, wasn't III./JG 6 equipped with Bf 109s? Why then was he flying a Fw 190? Secondly, F/O W.M.J. Bulleid of 193 Sqn did claim a Fw 190 on that date, but near Coesfeld (nearly 100 km away from Quackenbrück). This is the area where 266 Sqn (that 193 Sqn was covering) got 'bounced', losing two pilots. I'd appreciate any input. |

Apparently he wasn't in III./JG 6, but the Stab.

Re: Oblt. Paris of III./JG 6 vs. Typhoons on 25 Dec 1944
Thank you, that explains my first doubt!
One more question, if I may... A few days later, on 31 Dec 1944, Typhoons of 247 Sqn ranged out as far as Hannover. Two of them got separated, and west of Steinhuder Meer they were engaged by three Fw 190s. W/O R.G. McGregor (RNZAF) was KIA, while F/O T.R. Jackson claimed one of the Focke-Wulfs. Does anyone know who their opponents were? |

Oblt. Helmut Paris belonged indeed to Stab JG 6. He was probably not shot down but crashed due to an accident. I have a witness account of the pilot who flew with him that day. Maybe No. 194 Sqn was in combat with II./JG 1 who reported LK in Raum Münster.

yes, I know the card. Lt. Paris indeed was wounded on 6.12.1943 but recovered. He died on 9.2.1945 as a result from the injuries sustained on 25.12.1944. Strangely the WASt card does not reflect that.
