Re: Late war Bf 109 pictures source

Hi there Gang,

I just uploaded on my Flickr account 35 pictures of at least four different Bf109G-6, captured by US forces at Pachino-Scordia, Sicily, after 13 July 1943. All were found on the 57FG website (www.57thfigthergroup.org). The 57 Fighter Group claimed six Bf109G-6, refurbished them and used them quite extensively for joy-rides; at least one of them was transformed as a two seater and all were quite heavily used before falling into disrepair. The surviving machines were flown to Foggia-Amendola on 27 October 1943 as the 57FG moved there, and the last one was burnt on purpose on 1 March 1944 as 57FG moved to Naples.

Planes with German identities are:

1. Erla built Bf109G-6 W.Nr. unknown "Gelbe1" (?), 6./JG53, found at Pachino, Sicily, Summer 1943. Source: Collection Bob Hanning, 57thfigthergroup.org.

2. WNF (?) built Bf109G-6/R6 W.Nr. 20 ... "Schwarzer Winkel Kleine 4", Stab JG53, Comiso (?), July 1943. Source: 57thfightergroup.org.

You can find all images in those two folders:

Foggia-Amendola

Check please also the Comiso file, as there might be mistakes as to where which plane was effectively captured. Looking forward for any further details enabling to positively ID all those machines.

Thanks in advance
Marc
