11 sep 1944 - 4FG 1st Lt. Russell - crash location?

American Air Museum in Britain says: "On 11 September 1944, 1st Lt James Russell had just destroyed an Fw 190 in this aircraft when another fighter hit him in the cockpit with a 20mm shell. Near Fulda, when his aircraft started to burn, he crash-landed it and managed to get about 150 ft away from the wreckage, and then passed out. MACR 8987."

Both the serial number of the P-51 44-14158 and the MACR no. 8987 are missing on Fold3 - who can help me out? What was the crash location of Russell's P-51?

From 8th & 9th AAF Losses vol 4, page 335
" crash landing 11.45 hrs on the Hungerberg ( hill ) 2,200 yards South West of Herzfeld, Germany".

Good afternoon Cees

According J 2073, Russel came down at the district "Hungerberg", 2,5 km North of Niederaula, which is located about 2 km af Bad Hersfeld, Germany.

Many thanks, Horst! This info completed the overview of P-51's that crashed on 11 September 1944. This is part of the book 'Frankie' I am writing at the moment about Leonard Werner who is MIA since 20 Nov 1944 - crashed in lake IJsselmeer now the town Zeewolde. On 11/9/44 flying 44-13411 QP-Q he claimed one Bf 109 (which?) between Eisenach and Gotha.
Another mission that will be described in the book is that of 6th October 1944.
